Now, another popular figure, American commentator and sports journalist Clay Travis has taken it a step further by blaming Rapinoe for the team’s declining popularity.

Clay Travis believes Megan Rapinoe has led USWNT into ‘disaster’

Clay Travis, with a net worth of $10 million, is one of the most prominent faces in the commentary scene. In a recent statement, he boldly criticized Rapinoe, claiming that she was solely responsible for the decreasing popularity of the USWNT. Travis pointed out that the 2015 USWNT team was one of the most beloved teams, but the team’s popularity took a downward spiral after that.

He specifically blamed Rapinoe, stating, “I think, unfortunately, they got woke and Megan Rapinoe led them off the cliff”. To support his claim, Travis highlights a specific incident that occurred after the USWNT’s victory in the 2019 World Cup. Rapinoe declined the invitation to visit then-president Donald Trump at the White House.

Travis argues, “So when you actually analyze this, I think what happened is the team never played up to its talent”. Travis goes even further by suggesting that the USWNT “were lucky to even advance to the knockout stage”. He then asserted, “I think the woke nature of their political stance became toxic to the overall brand of the team. They played as ‘individuals’, and I think Megan Rapinoe led them into a disaster”.

The notion that the USWNT’s popularity declined due to Rapinoe’s political activism is a controversial one. There may be some who agree with Travis but there are also those who admire the OL Reigns forward. It is worth noting that Travis is not the first to criticize Rapinoe in recent times. As mentioned earlier Donald Trump has been leading headlines with his criticism.

In the penalty shootout against Sweden, Rapinoe was among the players who failed to score. Subsequently, Trump shared his criticism on the Truth Social App. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the USWNT  players’ and bashed them for perceiving hostility towards America.

Trump further added, “WOKE EQUALS FAILURE”. The former president then went on to sarcastically remark on Rapinoe’s missed shot. “Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! MAGA,” Trump stated.  It is evident that Rapinoe’s last tournament ended with a lot of controversy and criticism.
