Winner of the prestigious Ballon d’Or Féminin, Megan Rapinoe was one of the biggest draws in women’s soccer. Hence, when the world champion announced her retirement, supporters flocked to see her in action one last time. Consequently, her final NWSL game, OL Reign vs Washington Spirit, had a record-breaking attendance of 34130. But that figure is a thing of the past now. The NWSL attendance record has been shattered once again as Bay FC defeated Chicago Red Stars.

The match at Wrigley Field saw 35,038 fans in attendance. It was not exactly a full house, as the stadium had a capacity of 41,649. But, that is because Wrigley Field is by default a baseball stadium for the Chicago Cubs. The adjustments necessary to turn it into a soccer field meant that some seats had to be reduced. While the stakes were not as high as in Megan Rapinoe’s final game, there were some contributors to the impressive turnout.

Legendary Baseball figure Maybelle Blair was in attendance and she was the one who delivered the match-ball. Moreover, MLB star Dansby Swanson was present to cheer on his wife, Mallory Pugh of the Chicago Red Stars. Unfortunately, the Chicago Red Stars faced an upset defeat against a team lower on the table.

Speaking of tables, Megan Rapinoe’s side, OL Reign, is languishing in 13th place. Currently, only the Utah Royals have accumulated fewer points than them. If they don’t pick up the pace, it’s going to be pretty hard for them to qualify for the playoffs.

OL Reign struggling post the exit of Megan Rapinoe

Although they couldn’t win the NWSL Championship, OL Reign had a great season last year. They qualified for the playoffs and even reached the NWSL Championship final, only to be beaten by Gotham FC. It was an unlucky match for OL Reign, as they lost their talisman, Megan Rapinoe, as early as in the 6th minute. By the looks of it, their luck hasn’t improved much this year as well.

In 11 games this season, OL Reign has picked up just 7 points! They are finding it hard to score goals (11) and conceding way too easily (20). It is not yet known if the departure of Megan Rapinoe is the reason for the sharp decline. But it is clear, the club has not yet replaced the iconic figure. Recently, Seattle Reign announced the decision to retire Rapinoe’s legendary #15 jersey. But they might be better served if they find players with similar qualities as the talismanic #15.
