The year has been eventful for Megan Rapinoe. At the age of 38, Rapinoe announced her retirement from the sport at the end of this season. However, her last World Cup with the USWMNT sparked a spat with the former President of the United States Donald Trump, which seems to be a recurring theme between the two.

The altercation between Rapinoe and Trump is not a recent phenomenon. They have been going at each other since 2019. Let’s take a look at the entire timeline of the war of words between the USWNT legend and the former President.

It all started in May 2019, just prior to the start of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 in France. In an interview, Rapinoe described herself as a “walking protest against the Trump administration”. She also took her stand and protested against Trump’s ideologies. While this didn’t trigger a response from the businessman, what occurred following these words did.

As the World Cup began, things only escalated. In June 2019, after USWNT’s first victory in the tournament, a video resurfaced in which Rapinoe was asked if she was excited to go to the White House, a traditional honor for winning sports teams in the United States. Her response was clear and definitive: “Thanks, but no thanks. I’m not going to the f***ing White House”.

She further advised her teammates to “think hard” before accepting any honors from Trump’s administration. Naturally, these comments didn’t sit well with the then-president, who is known for taking personal offense to criticism. In response to Rapinoe’s statements, Trump fired back while writing on X.

“I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS!” Trump stated. “Finish the job! We haven’t yet….” This marked the first direct confrontation between the two controversial figures. However, the tension didn’t stop just there.

With the 2019 World Cup victory came even more scathing remarks

In July 2019, after the USWNT successfully lifted the World Cup trophy, Rapinoe, who won the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot made it clear that she had no intention of visiting the White House. Her criticism of Trump continued, with the 38-year-old using her platform as a successful athlete to voice her opinion on social and political issues.

Notably, she jokingly suggested that Trump was secretly a fan of hers. In another instance, she directly targeted Trump saying, “Your message is excluding people. You’re excluding me, you’re excluding people that look like me, you’re excluding people of color, you’re excluding Americans that maybe support you”. The forward even playfully floated the idea of running for the presidential job herself.

As the tension escalated, Rapinoe continued her verbal assaults on Trump. In August 2019, she labeled the president “a f***ing joke” and criticized him for allegedly abusing his power. These remarks did little to defuse the already heated situation between the two polarizing figures.

After a brief lull, the next major clash between Rapinoe and Trump occurred in August 2023. The USWNT’s disappointing exit from the Round of 16 in the World Cup to Sweden placed Rapinoe under scrutiny. Her missed penalty during the match attracted criticism, including a sarcastic remark from Trump. The president mockingly applauded Rapinoe’s failed shot and proclaimed, “Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! MAGA”.

After a period of silence, Megan Rapinoe addressed the issue surrounding Trump and called his criticism “fake”. In regard to the team’s confidence, she acknowledged that the lack of support had an impact. Throughout their ongoing feud, both Rapinoe and Trump have not held back in expressing their disdain for one another. As their feud continues, it remains to be seen how their next chapter will unfold.
