Roland was a wrestler during his initial days but had to give it up after an injury to his hand when he was 21 years old while his mother played professional badminton. Roland Kroos then took up soccer coaching and even brought Toni and his younger brother Felix under him during their younger days. Roland also coached FC Hansa Rostock, Germany’s second-division club’s youth team for 14 years before moving to Greifswalder FC, a club that plays in the regional leagues.

Meanwhile, in Greifswalder, he held various positions including the role of a manager and technical director. But citing his age, Toni’s father gave up coaching responsibilities and took an advisory role. However, he led the club to an important promotion to Regionalliga Nordost the third tier of German soccer.
