Matt Turner’s journey has been a rollercoaster ride. From starring as a goalkeeper in the MLS to serving as a backup at Crystal Palace. His career has taken an unexpected turn. Similarly, after struggling for playing time with Crystal Palace, a former USMNT legend urges Mauricio Pochettino’s favorite goalie to move away, following Zack Steffen’s path,
We’ve all seen players struggle to find their footing when they’ve been pushed aside. The question arises: How long can you sit on the sidelines before teams lose interest? Turner’s situation is a perfect example. At Crystal Palace, he’s been pushed down the pecking order, and despite his potential, he’s not getting the minutes he needs to prove himself. Moreover, with Mauricio Pochettino demanding minutes under his belt, it will interesting to see how Matt finds a solution.
On the CBS Sports YouTube channel, former USMNT legends Jimmy Conrad, Tony Meola, and Charlie Davies discussed Turner’s situation. Where Charlie Davies had some interesting thoughts about Turner’s next move. “He knows he has to play going into a World Cup. So he has a, he has a European passport. That’s a big help, which means he can play anywhere in Europe and it’s not being looked at as, Oh, you’re an American. You’re taking up a foreign roster designation in some cases, or you have to be paid a certain number because you’re not in the EU. So that helps him mightily.”

He brought up an intriguing possibility for Turner. “I think the Bundesliga is probably the best fit for him because you’re a competitive league. You just have to go to the right club. We saw Zack Steffen. He did really well when he went to the Bundesliga and he was a backup at Manchester City.“ Davies pointed out how the Bundesliga could be the perfect environment for Turner to get the minutes he needs just like other USMNT goalie Zack Steffen.
The focus is on gaining experience through actual match situations, rather than relying solely on practice, which isn’t sufficient for his growth. Essentially, the speaker believes Turner needs more real-world experience to develop his skills. “The guy just needs reps under pressure. That’s essentially what he needs. And practice isn’t enough for him to, make that happen.” said Davies.
So now if everyone is suggesting a move outside of England then when should Matt Turner Go? Big Question mark right?

Which direction should Matt Turner take to explore new horizons beyond England?
Where consistent performance is key to maintaining or advancing a player’s career for USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino. Matt Turner’s current stint at Crystal Palace with 1 start in nine months tells a downward career trajectory, where moving from one club to another without achieving success could ultimately lead to relegation to lower-tier leagues, such as the Championship, instead of upward progress in more competitive leagues or clubs.
Charlie Davies suggests that Matt Turner should consider leaving England to find opportunities in other leagues, “You get out of England and you go to Bundesliga, you go to Liga. I like the Celtic ranger shot because you still play European competition. So that checks that box.” Davies believes moving to a club like Celtic or Rangers could be beneficial, as it would allow Turner to compete in European tournaments while still being part of a team that dominates its domestic league.
