Is Zack Steffen the savior USMNT needs, or should Pochettino have stuck with Matt Turner?

The goalkeeping situation of the USMNT remains one riddle, and Mauricio Pochettino must mend it soon. Tim Howard and Brad Friedel became the team’s mainstay with their goalkeeping prowess. Nowadays, the USMNT lacks a reliable goalie for the team who can be called upon when the situation arises. Therefore, Pochettino selected Zack Steffen in favor of Matt Turner, one of the previous regulars.

In fact, Turner comes in as a second goalkeeper for Crystal Palace, who opted for Dean Henderson as their number 1. Thus, he must regain his form to make the team. And with Pochettino, he needs his players to play every single minute for their clubs.

“I think all the players that will be in the roster have been worked on in the last months with all the staff in the national team. We have excellent professionals working, following, and analyzing all the players who have the possibility to join us,” quoted Pochettino in an interview.

With Turner out, it’s another opportunity for Zack Steffen to make his mark. The player developed his craft under Pep Guardiola and Manchester City and made 21 appearances for the club. And yes, Poch believes he ‘earned it.’ He continued, “I think Zack Steffen deserves the opportunity to be with us. Of course, we always consider all the circumstances when making decisions, but I believe he has earned the chance to be part of our first roster.”

To be honest, the Argentine coach has his work cut out if wishes the team to progress. The USMNT continuously stutters at major tournaments and with a coach like Poch, it could be a blessing for the national team. Likewise, he wants to scrutinize players which will help his cause.

Mauricio Pochettino is ready to unleash his USMNT army!

“I can explain that we’ve been working from a distance with all the analysis. Trying to find the best squad with the best balance. I think it’s a good opportunity to see him and analyze not just him, but all the players involved in the roster,” concluded Mauricio Pochettino, aiming to show what he has in store for us.

Have an interesting take?

The first job would be to get the best goalkeeper available to the team. Although Gabriel Slonina is an upcoming prospect, Steffen has experience. The young Slonina would need time to integrate himself into the team as Steffen can comfortably settle. He already has 29 matches under his belt for the national team and his experience could prove vital.
