I thought the American-based players in the MLS were better than the American players now in the MLS,” said French icon Theirry Henry about his playing days in the MLS. For a long time, Major League Soccer teams have cut corners to invest in fresh new talent on the pitch. Most American players went abroad and plied their trade. In comes Mauricio Pochettino with a rich European pedigree, who aims to take the USMNT to the top.

Yet, the MLS representation on the current roster looks bleak. Of the 25 players called to the main team by Pochettino, only four players in the MLS make the squad. Zack Steffen (Colorado Rapids), Patrick Schulte (Columbus Crew), Tim Ream (Charlotte FC), and Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati) are the four MLS players on the side. Hence, questions arose about the quality of the league.

Moreover, it probably highlights the fact that Mauricio Pochettino wants more European experience in his squad. Yet, that’s not true. The former Chelsea coach appeared in an interview with CNN to discuss this in detail. He mentioned, “I don’t think that to be an elite player you have to be in Europe,” and understands the fans’ judgment over his decisions. If you look at the Spanish national team, the coaches compile most players from La Liga.

On the other hand, “We also have to consider that in other countries, in other leagues, you can also be an elite player competing in different places,” detailed Pochettino, who comprehends the presence of his crucial players in Europe. Nevertheless, the MLS is sure to grow especially after the biggest name in soccer now plies his trade in the sunny shores of Miami.

Mauricio Pochettino perfectly details the influence of Lionel Messi

Players like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie are the mainstays of AC Milan and Juventus, respectively, this season. The level of competition they indulge in Europe differs completely from the quality of that of the MLS. However, the situation is changing. The MLS is, in fact, growing. Lionel Messi’s arrival shatters the preconceived notions some of us held about the league. Pochettino continued, “We are seeing today that great players like Messi are competing in MLS and for us I think that is something important to transmit, that MLS is a competitive league and that by competing in MLS you can also be in the U.S. national team.”

Notably, Mauricio Pochettino remains steadfast in his approach and would pick players who compete for the national team. On the contrary, he wants to avoid players who play in Europe but don’t get the required minutes. It’s about competition for Poch. Be competitive and you are in the team. And this is how the former PSG coach aims to construct a winning squad.
