Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League night was full of surprises and extensive developments. In Group F, while Borussia Dortmund secured their position in the Round of 16 with a win over AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) managed a draw against Newcastle United, thanks to a last-minute penalty from their star player, Kylian Mbappe. However, the game’s aftermath saw an interesting dig from Dortmund’s defender, Mats Hummels, aimed at PSG.
The PSG vs Newcastle United match had a dramatic ending, with PSG equalizing in the 98th minute through a penalty kick that some deemed questionable. Mbappe scored the penalty, salvaging a point for his team. And the German defender Hummels couldn’t resist taking a swipe following this result.

Unaware of the late equalizer, Hummels sat down for a post-match interview after Dortmund’s victory over AC Milan. During the interview, they informed him about the penalty, and he took a subtle swipe at PSG. Hummels, with a hint of sarcasm, asked, “At least justified this time?”

His comment referenced a previous Champions League encounter between Dortmund and PSG, where the Parisians were awarded another questionable penalty, leading to a 2-0 victory. Hummels’ remark can be interpreted as a dig at Mbappe and PSG for winning with another controversial penalty.
Matthias Sammer, a TV pundit, responded to Hummels’ question with a pause and a smile before humorously saying, “Probably hand.” The comment drew laughter from those present at the table. The 2014 World Cup winner’s remarks regarding the penalty can be interpreted as lighthearted banter. However, Newcastle’s manager does not share the same sentiment and expressed dismay toward this debatable judgment. Especially Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, who was distraught!
Newcastle manager feels injustice happened to them!
The controversial penalty, awarded to PSG after VAR intervention, not only leveled the score but also denied Newcastle the opportunity to secure three points and a lead over PSG in Group F. Following this outcome, Newcastle’s head coach, Eddie Howe, expressed his frustration over the penalty decision.

He attributed it to the pressure exerted by the PSG players on the officials. Howe believes that there was injustice in awarding the penalty and stated it was an incorrect decision. He explained, “The ball hits his chest first, comes up, and hits his hand. But his hand is not in an unnatural position. They [his hands] are down by his side, but he is in a running motion.”
He further added, “I feel it is a poor decision and hugely frustrating for us, as you know how little time there is left in the game.” Now Newcastle United finds themselves relying on luck. They must win their next match against AC Milan while hoping for PSG’s defeat at the hands of Dortmund.
