Wrexham AFC, co-owned by Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, will play the replay of the FA Cup fourth-round game next week. They were so close to a fifth-round birth on Sunday until their opponent Sheffield United scored a last-gasp goal to draw the game. Wrexham is having a dream campaign this season. 

The club is at the top of the National League, the automatic promotion spot, and is the only non-league team remaining in the FA Cup. Meanwhile, their fourth-round FA Cup game on Sunday was the most viewed soccer game last weekend in the US, trumping the big games in top European leagues.

Wrexham is becoming popular day by day in the US. Most of the credit goes to the Hollywood owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, for the club’s popularity in the country with the Welcome to Wrexham documentary. However, apart from that, the club is also paying back the faith of the soccer fans through their enthralling league and FA Cup campaign till now. 

Wrexham beat the second-division side, Coventry, in the third round of the FA Cup game, which was full of drama. They nearly collapsed to the end after the comfortable lead but managed to hold on. However, their fourth-round game, another nail-biter, against Sheffield United ended in a draw, meaning the game will be replayed. It became the most watched soccer game on Sunday in the US despite a host of top matches on that day.

ESPN broadcasts all the FA Cup games in the US. As per the broadcaster, it was the most-watched game on all the platforms of ESPN. What makes the achievement of the Wrexham game important is other matches that took place on the day and still managed to come out on top. The likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool, PSG, Napoli, AS Roma, and Borussia Dortmund were in action on the same day, and Wrexham trumped them all.

Deadpool star joked on the report stating the Wrexham game was the most watched soccer game in the US on Sunday. He tweeted, ” It was so popular, we decided in the 95th minute of the game to green-light the sequel.”

Wrexham will travel to Altrincham for the weekend’s game in the National League. They will next play the FA Cup replay next week against Sheffield away from home and hope to go past them to set up a blockbuster clash with the Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur in the fifth round.
