Can Brentford pull off an upset against Manchester City, or is this a guaranteed win for the champions?

After a brief international break, the upcoming weekend finally makes some way for domestic action. Concerning the Premier League, Manchester City will host Brentford on Saturday, September 14 evening at the Etihad Stadium. The Sky Blues are currently sitting at the top of the table with 9 points, securing victories in all of their three matches before the September window. After an easy 2-0 win over Chelsea on the opening day, they clinched a 1-4 victory over Ipswich Town, followed by a 1-3 victory over West Ham United. Seven of their goals in these three games came alone from Erling Haaland, including two consecutive hatricks. Pep Guardiola and Co. have won each of their last 12 games by two goals or more—a remarkable record in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Brentford began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool. They skipped Matchday 2 in preparation for the EFL Cup second round, clinching a narrow win over League Two side Colchester United F.C. Making a quick return to Premier League before the international break, Thomas Frank and Co. secured a 3-1 victory over Southampton. Interestingly, Brentford is the last team to beat Man City on their own turf, having clinched a 2-1 victory over the Citizens in November 2022, thanks to a brace from their recently departed Ivan Toney.

Injuries

Manchester City

Oscar Bobb remained the only worry in the injury department, who continues to nurse his leg fracture. However, joining the talented attacker in the recuperation room will now be Nathan Ake. The center-back was forced off the pitch while in action for Netherlands vs Germany on Tuesday. Though an official statement is yet to be given, it looked like a serious muscular injury for Ake.

Brentford

As for Brentford, the injury list is quite big. While Igor Thiago and Josh Dasilva continue to nurse their knock in the knees, Aaron Hickey is on the bed with a hamstring blow. The latest addition to the recuperation room is Rico Henry after sustaining a minor injury during the international break.

Brentford is without several stars due to injury, as well as losing out their star player Ivan Toney to Al Ahli Saudi. Though this concludes with a major problem, that won’t deny the threat they may pose to the Sky Blues at their home ground. However, that may not be enough to shake up Guardiola’s side, who look determined to carry forward with their winning streak. We reckon it’s a win for the reigning champions and the score will be Manchester City 2-1 Brentford.
