Besides winning four Premier League titles in a row, Manchester City has also earned the reputation of being England’s most financially viable club. Last season, the Sky Blues posted a record profit north of $80 million. The club’s unmatched transfer policy is one reason its financials remain steady. Speaking of City’s transfer policy, Pep Guardiola and Co. just received a $10 million cash injection, courtesy of Douglas Luiz- a player they sold to Aston Villa in 2019. Interestingly, Luiz is not the first long-departed player to boost the Sky Blues financially.

In a move to meet the Premier League’s accounting deadline, Aston Villa sold their key midfielder Douglas Luiz to Italian powerhouse Juventus for a $52 million fee. Thanks to the 20% sell-on clause attached to Luiz, his former club City is now eligible to receive $10 million from Aston Villa, according to Manchester World.

As per the sell-on clause rule, a club selling a player is eligible for compensation from their buyer if the purchasing club sells the player to a third club. Hence City is now enjoying the financial boost from Douglas Luiz’s 2019 move to Aston Villa.

This cash injection is vital to Pep Guardiola and Co., considering they will go bullish on major players in the summer transfer window. Big names such as Bruno Guimaraes, with a $102 million price tag, are notably on City’s radar. Though the Cityzens are reluctant to spend that heavily on Guimaraes, this latest cash injection might prompt them to take a U-turn. Regarding financial boosts, Guardiola’s team has previously profited from selling past players, including one this year.

Manchester City could register north of $30 million from the sale of former players this season

If Douglas Luiz’s sale to Aston Villa-Juventus deal helped Manchester City raise $10 million, former player Taylor Harwood-Bellis’s deal helped them rake double this summer. City had loaned Harwood-Bellis to Southampton, and he joined the recently promoted side on a permanent deal, helping Guardiola and Co. raise $22 million. Besides, City earned $4 million from another Aston Villa deal after Middlesbrough United sold their former player Morgan Rogers to Villa this January.

Similarly, Manchester City’s former youth player James Trafford is expected to leave Burnley and join Newcastle United this transfer window. This means City is eligible for a reward north of $5 million, thanks to the sell-in clause on Trafford. Hence, Guardiola and Co. can conveniently raise more than $30 million this transfer season, solely because their buyers sold their former players to a third club. Therefore, the current English champions are not hesitant to spend lavishly in the transfer market.
