Manchester City is on its way to shattering record books. After winning the treble last season, it now has a chance to become the only team to do it on two consecutive occasions. However, Pep Guardiola’s team has two problems for the UEFA Champions League. One is to face the 15-time winners Real Madrid in the quarterfinals this Tuesday. But the primary concern is the injuries to two key players from the squad, according to a recent revelation. With a reputed bench strength, will the Sky Blues beat the injury storm on Tuesday?

To be the best you have to prepare for the worst. And this could be the biggest litmus test for the Premier League giants without their ace defenders Kyle Walker and Nathan Ake out for the first leg of the quarterfinal. According to reports, both the stars will not travel with the squad to the Spanish capital. However, the Croatian monster Josko Gvardiol will be travelling suggested reports.

Injuries have been a primary concern for Manchester City this season. Walker was another causality, sustaining a hamstring injury against Brazil in the international friendlies. Even though initially optimistic, the player was on the sidelines for the last three games. On the other hand, Ake was reported to have caught an unknown injury against the Gunners last Sunday and also missed the two wins against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, Gvardiol, who earlier suffered an ankle issue in February, was subbed off by the Spanish coach after half time citing fitness concerns during the Crystal Palance game, but seems to be fit to go. Additionally, their primary goalkeeper Ederson, returned to the bench after his injury against Liverpool in March. It will give some respite for the Premier League champions’ defense, who will be under severe pressure.

Weakened Manchester City’s defense to take on strong Real Madrid

The injuries are a terrible setback for City, as Walker and Ake proved critical for their backline. Both right and left defensive flanks could now be vulnerable for the trophy holders against Los Blancos. But Gvardiol’s inclusion is a relief, as he can be used as a backup in the center and the left positions for Ake. Ake has been instrumental in handling the left wall and is also a valuable asset during attacks with surprising goals and assists. Walker, being one of the fastest players in the world with a speed of mid-30 kmph, has been crucial in holding challenging players on the right.

Therefore, Real Madrid, which has a strong offensive with players like Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr., and Jude Bellingham, will look more lethal. Vinicius, who struggled against the 33-year-old in their clubs’ previous encounter, will relish facing a City defense without Walker. Overall, the away game looks like a gigantic task for Guardiola, but with ample backup, the team in blue can surprise even the best.
