In recent years, Manchester City has enjoyed a period of tremendous success. A key figure in that success story is Erling Haaland, who has shattered records and lit up the Premier League with his goal-scoring prowess. Despite all this, Manchester City ambassador Shaun Wright-Phillips believes Haaland is not the team’s most important player.

Haaland has made an immediate impact since joining Manchester City, scoring an impressive 19 goals across all competitions this season. Also, he recently became the fastest player in Premier League history to reach the milestone of 50 Premier League goals. However, this isn’t enough for Wright-Phillips to crown him the most important player as for him that title belongs to Rodri.

During an interview with CBS Sports Golazo, Wright-Phillips was asked who he believed was the most important player for Manchester City. Without hesitation, he replied, “Rodri.” Wright-Phillips went on to explain his choice, highlighting the midfielder’s influence on the team’s success.

“I think even last year he was just key to that success,” said Wright-Phillips. “I think this year, obviously, when he got suspended you could see that.” The former Man City player further added, ” I wouldn’t say the players are not capable enough to play without him because I think they are because they’re all fantastic. But I think the way City play in general, he makes them tick.”

Wright-Phillips’ opinion is rooted in the valuable role that Rodri plays in Manchester City’s tactical framework. “Everything, the ball goes through him, the way he positions in transitions as well, when this is the other way around. I just think he is a massive part to that puzzle,” concluded Wright-Phillips. Interestingly Shaun Wright-Phillips is not the only one who shares this belief.

Another pundit who gave a similar statement is French icon Frank Leboeuf. Just last month Leboeuf responded to a fan’s question on who he believes is more important, Rodri or Erling Haaland. Leboeuf confidently replied, “I would have to go for Rodri, for the reason that he is in the middle of the park.”
