Cristiano Ronaldo struggled to find his form in the early stages of the Qatar World Cup in 2022, scoring just once in the group stage. He was eventually dropped from the starting line-up by coach Fernando Santos for the Round of 16 match against Switzerland. And then benched for the quarterfinal match against Morocco. On this occasion, Artem Dzyuba expressed his disapproval of the way Ronaldo was treated at the greatest stage of soccer.
In an interview, he quoted, “When you hear the word Portugal, what do you think? Oh, Cristiano Ronaldo. Portugal is associated with Cristiano Ronaldo for the whole world. And that’s how you treat him!”.

CR7 holds the record for the most international goals scored by a men’s player, with 123 goals in 200 appearances. The Portuguese veteran had consistently broken records at both the club and international levels throughout the decade. Dzyuba also claimed that Portugal should still start the 38-age old striker due to his unmatched quality on the ground. Dzyuba suggested, “He deserves it by just being there. The man scored 800 goals. Is he worse than any of these? I just don’t understand.”
