Mallory Swanson credited the 2021 career downfall for her current form

Swanson has been a special talent since the very beginning. At the age of just 18, she turned professional in the NWSL. At the tender age of 21, she managed to feature in a World Cup. However, injury concerns like her recurring hamstring issue have kept on derailing her. Between 2020 -2021, Swanson played only five matches. She was also then shockingly left out of the Tokyo Olympics roster.

Through sheer hard work and with the help of a sport psychologist, she pulled off a major comeback in 2022 and carried forward those performances into 2023.

Recently, the NWSL star was in conversation with CBS, she said, “Sometimes as athletes, like you think of a certain goal, slide tackle, whatever, that you make. But I think for me, it was like kind of just overcoming the adversity that came in 2021. I looked back and I’m like ‘Okay, I can do it and I can keep going,’ and so just having that little bit has just helped me. I’m just going with the flow, and whatever comes my way, just take it as it is, and continue just to be me”.

Considering her electric form on the pitch, Swanson would have been vital to the USWNT’s success at the upcoming 2023 Women’s World Cup. However, it just wasn’t meant to be.
