Major NWSL 2022 Records

The 2022 edition of the National Women’s Soccer League was its tenth season. The NWSL regular season spanned from April 29 to October 2, 2020. OL Reign won the NWSL Shield after topping the points table with 40 points. After beating Kansas City Current 2-0 in the playoff final, Portland Thorns FC became the champions of the league. Apart from that, North Carolina Courage lifted the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup after beating Washington Spirit 2-1 in the final.

Apart from all the winners, let’s also have a look at some of the major records that were achieved during the 2022 edition.

Top scorer

Alex Morgan was the leading goal scorer of NWSL 2022. She topped the season’s goals chart with a grand total of 16 goals. Of the 16, five of those goals were scored from the penalty spot.

On the other hand, Sophia Smith was just a whisker away with 15 goals for the season.

Most assists

North Carolina Courage’s Carson Pickett was the player who assisted the most goals last season. The left-back managed to assist six goals for her team throughout the season. Tied with the same assists tally was Mallory Swanson from Chicago Red Stars with six assists too.

Best goalkeeper

Katie Lund from Racing Louisville had a staggering 76.2% save percentage at the end of the season. Even though she tops this chart, Lund conceded 35 goals in just 22 league games, the third worst for the season.

Apart from that, Portland Thorns’ Bella Bixby managed to hold on to 10 clean sheets for the season.

TV record

Soccer continues to gain immense popularity in America. A grand total of 915,000 viewers tuned in to watch the 2022 NWSL final. While Portland Thorns claimed their third National Women’s Super League title, this game represented a staggering 71% increase in viewership from last season. This was the ‘most-watched’ game in league history.

CBS handed the women’s soccer league a prime time slot on their channel, which could be the reason for the spike in viewership.

In other news, soccer managed to beat the NBA and the MLB in the Top 100 viewership chart on American televisions for 2022. All in all, 2022 was truly a landmark season for soccer in America.
