Lynn Williams has played wonderfully since joining Gotham FC this season, still showing what she is capable of doing on the field both with her skills and leadership. Similarly, Williams has a long history of being an outspoken champion for women’s football, and so it never really registered that she would abruptly turn her back on the sport. That speculation was further stoked by a few cryptic Instagram posts, which many interpreted as a farewell to the game.
But despite Williams clearing the air, speculation still festered. She replied to one Instagram comment, “Have I missed something? Lynn’s last few post have seemed like retirement post please tell me I’m wrong, saying “You’re wrong” with the smile emoji. Given her recent form with Gotham FC, Williams has been nothing short of sensational. Though the team may be struggling, she has not looked out of place, combining those remarkable technical skills with her leadership on the pitch.

Her ability to generate scoring opportunities and her energy without the puck are assets the Falcons have needed. Williams has not discounted the idea of retiring at some stage but for now simply “laughed” at plans to walk away from soccer. She is looking forward to the future and hopes to continue her career in the NWSL. Williams had a tremendous influence on Gotham FC. Lynn Williams was not merely blowing smoke with her headliner. The 31-year-old Team USA soccer star went to TikTok to tell the insane story of how she returned from the 2024 Paris Olympics—almost—in one piece. Technically, she did, though, if not her gold medal. Their team was celebrating a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Brazil to win their first Olympic gold since 2012, when the unexpected happened. “How did I break my medal?” – in a now-viral clip posted by Lynn first, she opened, teasing her followers: “How in the… did I just get the world’s most expensive roller coaster?”

“Obviously, you guys all saw me swinging the thing around… Ironically, that’s not how it broke… We were dancing. I had it on my shoulder like a little purse, and I was just jumping—dancing, jumping—and I jumped down, and it just fell off,” she continued, explaining, “So, everybody was dancing, and I was roaming around, trying to get my medal off the ground. It has a dent now. So, it’s definitely one-of-a-kind, and the little bar [inside the medal] is gone.”

With the USWNT not back in action again until October, Williams’ focus now switches back to her club, Gotham. The reigning NWSL champion returns to action this weekend against the Portland Thorns, as the league resumes. However, Williams may not be available for selection again yet as the U.S. Olympians are to be granted a little extra time off following their exploits at Paris 2024.
