Recently, a video surfaced of a member of parliament of Ghana comparing the vice president of the country with the English defender Harry Maguire while debating in parliament. Ghana is going through an economic setback and the debate was about the annual national budget for 2023. The statement mentioning Romelu Lukaku came after the speech by MP Isaac Adongo in which he compared the VP with Maguire. Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, a member of parliament, gave a counter-statement.

Djornobuah implied that the country can do better with ‘Economic Maguire’ rather than having a striker like Romelu Lukaku. The parliament took the football reference and made it a meme war during the official discussion.

John Dramani Mahama called the ‘Romelu Lukaku of Ghana’

While addressing the Maguire title by the MP, and targeting the former president, John Dramani Mahama, another MP said, “It is better for us to maintain Maguire… rather than to bring a striker like Romelu Lukaku whom Chelsea sold to Inter Milan… Had the confidence that Lukaku can actually help them with their striking force. Not knowing that Lukaku is the worst striker in the whole world… we were in this country where the so-called striker was not able to provide electricity for 20-24 hours.

Romelu Lukaku is the striker who was part of the Belgian national team in FIFA WC 2022, but their performance was very underwhelming. Belgium failed to qualify for the next round of the tournament, with just one win in the group stage. The loss against Morocco was so significant that it erupted riots in Brussels. Lukaku finished his World Cup campaign without a goal.

Harry Maguire got trolled first

While giving his speech during a budget discussion, Ghanaian MP Isaac Adongo said, “Harry Maguire, he’s a defender. He was tackling everybody and throwing his body everywhere… was seen as the best defender in the world… He became the biggest threat… tackling Manchester players and giving assists to opponents. Mr. Speaker, when you see the opponents go to score, Maguire will score for them.
