It was an anxious wait for the fans to see Luis Suarez move to Inter Miami. But will their desire to see him join Lionel Messi be fulfilled? Since Messi moved to the US, the talks of the Uruguayan player joining have been on and off. However, there is a latest update that could hamper the chances of him joining the team. It’s about the MLS exclusive ‘designated player’ spot and an important call taken by the league.

Soccer leagues across the world adopt innovative ideas to give them an edge over others. The MLS has a DP policy that allows the signing of three such players whose wages would not be considered inside the salary cap. Similar to Messi, Inter Miami also wanted to draft Suarez in this category.

Luis Suarez will not be a designated player

With all the excitement of Luis Suarez quitting his recent club Gremio to give Inter Miami a shot, the emotion could change a bit. According to a senior reporter, José Armando, the Uruguayan, will not be drafted as a designated player for Inter Miami. The reason is that the club already has three such players, which is the maximum limit for a club and there wouldn’t be a provision to add a fourth slot. However, Luis Suarez still has a chance to join the team as a normal player.

Apart from Lionel Messi, the team also brought in former Barcelona defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets until 2025. Another player who was drafted into this category is the Brazilian midfielder Gregore. The Miami-based team had to bring Busquets as a DP, as their allocated money wasn’t sufficient to afford him as a normal player.

David Beckham‘s club was penalized in 2021 for their salary cap violations in the 2020 season. The MLS reduced $2,271,250 of allocation money to the club for seasons 2022 and 2023. Amid the financial roadblocks and makeshift policies to accommodate the best of the best, an update about the squad restructure will be given soon, as will Luis Suarez’s position after a great season.
