The reunion between Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Inter Miami remains a highlight for all the soccer fans. Who knew that fate would give the former FC Barcelona stars a chance to enjoy the last years of their careers together? While the presence of La Pulga must have made it easier for Suarez to play in the MLS, this doesn’t seem to be the case, as it was rather the fact that no Mexican team wanted him.

Ahead of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal Leg 1 against Monterrey, El Pistolero was questioned about why he didn’t choose to join Liga MX instead. As compiled by journalist Favian Renkel, Suarez jokingly replied, “This year no Mexican team wanted me, it was last year [they were interested].” However, the Uruguayan promptly emphasized the primary drive to join Inter Miami became the opportunity to reunite with former teammates, as well as his aspiration to contribute to the growth of the club’s legacy in Miami and achieve success by winning championships.

Even if it was a joke from the former Liverpool man, it leads to the subtle revelation that Suarez did indeed receive offers from Mexican clubs last season to join them. It would have happened while he might have been playing either for his childhood club, Nacional, or, shortly thereafter, for Gremio. However, the striker likely turned them down, with only Inter Miami eager to acquire his services this year. So far, his decision has proven fruitful. 

The 37-year-old has made over nine appearances across the MLS and the Champions League, bagging seven goals and providing five assists. He would be required to keep up with this form, given that there is doubt over the presence of his amigo, Messi.

Tomorrow’s quarterfinal Leg 1 against Monterrey presents a significant challenge for Inter Miami. Star player Lionel Messi has been absent from action for two weeks, nursing an overload in his right hamstring. Even Tata Martino failed to provide an update on the skipper’s return for the upcoming match, with still no update so far. It forces no one but Luis Suarez to take the team’s command.

While support from Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba remains at the back, the Uruguayan will be relied upon to score goals. Additionally, the likes of Julian Gressel, Leonardo Campana, and Robert Taylor are also expected to give their best. However, if Messi manages to make a return in time, it would spell double trouble for Monterrey. Nevertheless, let’s see what unfolds at this stage.
