Soccer club Real Madrid’s run to the Champions League title last year was nothing short of spectacular. This season too, the Spanish giants are looking to replicate that success and are on track to do so after topping their group and thrashing Liverpool 5-2 in the first leg of the Round of 16 on Tuesday.

However, their last season run was just something special. Real Madrid put on decisive performances last year as they defeated opponents like PSG, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Liverpool to lift the Champions League trophy.

While many people have praised Real Madrid for their achievement, former Liverpool player and current soccer pundit, Jamie Carragher believes that the team was just “lucky”.

Ex-Liverpool soccer player’s bold take on Real Madrid

After the recent Liverpool and Madrid encounter, Carragher gave his hot take on Real’s historic 14th UCL win. “I must say – sorry for interrupting – I think Real Madrid were one of the luckiest teams to ever win the Champions League,” Carragher said.

Carragher firmly believes that Madrid’s goals were often lucky, as they often came late in the match. Carragher further added, “PSG: they scored two goals with seven minutes to go. Chelsea: they took them to extra time. Man City: they scored two in the last minute. And in the final [Thibaut] Courtois was Man-of-the-Match.”

While Carragher may not be a fan of Madrid’s success, there are some that are.

The first one to disagree with Carragher’s hot take was ex-Barcelona and Arsenal star, Thierry Henry. He pointed out that soccer requires more than just luck to pull off a late win. In Henry’s words, “when you see that run you can’t say that they were lucky…Football is 90+ minute, so if you have the time, you can score”.

Henry was quick to state his counterargument professionally. Despite Carragher’s claims, there is no denying that Madrid put on several courageous performances last year. They defeated all their opponents and made history in the process.
