The FIFA Women’s World Cup is just months away now. USWNT players are riding the high of destroying every team they faced this year. Apart from one major hiccup, almost everything seems to be in a perfect place for the team. They have players like Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, arguably better than other teams. Even in the absence of Mallory Swanson, fans will have the same expectations from the team.

Talking about expectations, this World Cup title will be a chance for the USWNT to attain an elusive three-peat. Along with boosting the morale of the team, this fact has also put them more under pressure. Given that the World Cup comes every four years, every edition holds its own importance. In a podcast, Megan Rapinoe sat down with USWNT forward Lynn Williams and midfielder Sam Mewis. In the show, they discussed the team’s current situation following a devastating blow with Swanson ruled out for an indefinite time. During the discussion, at one point, Rapinoe revealed her predicament on taking penalty kicks.

Taking an absolutely hilarious route she said, “The worst thing that could happen is if you have to step up there, and you take it and it’s like the final one and you lose the World Cup for our country. But, the best thing that could happen is you win the world cup for your country. So I think I always, like, focus on that.” More than her, though the golden reaction came from her teammates.

For this golden advice, Lynn Williams said, “That was like, horrible advice.” She perfectly concluded this hilarious bit in just five words. An overhaul is in the horizon for the USWNT as they enter the final stages of preparation prior to the World Cup.

The comebacks and additions to the team

The team had just announced the roster for WC a few days before the first match against Ireland. Fans and even legends were excited about the comeback of the midfield magician Julie Ertz. The main concern now for the team is definitely to scramble for a replacement for Mallory Swanson.

Angel City FC’s newest recruit and 2023 NWSL first overall pick, Alyssa Thompson, joined the team for the second friendly.
