Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid—can Liverpool afford to lose their star defender?

International soccer may be done but the flavor will continue with club soccer. The Premier League is back and will kick off shortly. Liverpool will be a team to watch out for in the 2023-24 season as the Merseyside club has a hungry set of stars like Mohamed Salah who want to make a mark after losing out on the league title last time. While the club has not made any big news in this summer transfer window so far, the fans now have some significant updates about important players like Marc Guehi, Adrien Rabiot, and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future.

According to recent reports, Liverpool is close to landing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The deal is expected to be worth $84 million approximately. The club is confident about sealing the deal as Arsenal is out of the race. The Ivory Coast-born still has two years left with Palace but the player is expected to leave the London club in search of trophies.

While his recent rise to prominence with consistent performances for England at the Euros was very noticeable, Guehi has been on Liverpool’s radar for quite some time. With strong duel-winning skills and backline prowess, the player had a 58.3% success in challenges last season appearing 29 times for the Glaziers. Acquiring him in 2021 from Chelsea, Palace could now reap the benefits of developing the player, but the giants Liverpool appear to be getting closer.

Liverpool had a challenge from the Gunners, but they have reportedly backed out now due to the high price tag of the player. The Reds haven’t made a single signing yet and are already facing a lot of competition from rivals who have poached a couple of key targets.

According to other reports, Liverpool has given up on Adrien Rabiot. Recent talks indicate that Manchester United is the 2018 World Cup-winning star’s preferred team and might land the midfielder. Rabiot recently denied a two-year contract extension with the Italian giants as his previous deal had expired on June 30th.

But more importantly, Liverpool could lose their key defender Trent Alexander-Arnold to European rivals Real Madrid next year. The European champions were already eyeing the right-back this year but the $87m expectation from the English club meant that the deal didn’t materialize. Nevertheless, as his contract is set to expire next season, the most successful club in the continent could be on the verge of acquiring Trent as a free agent. However, few reports suggest that Trent’s decision will depend on Liverpool’s performance this season.

Liverpool’s journey this transfer window has been far from smooth, considering they lost Leny Yoro to Manchester United. Several of their interests have been linked to the rivals and that can be a bit frustrating for the club and the fans. What do you think about Liverpool’s moves in the transfer market so far?
