Many soccer players fear not getting the chance to play, and then getting sold in their early days. Surprisingly, David Beckham shared similar fears at Manchester United. However, Becks recalled how he channeled that fear to become successful at not only United but everywhere else he went.

David Beckham burst onto the scene in the 1994-95 season for Manchester United. However, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to let him join Preston North End on loan in the lower divisions.

In the January transfer window of the 94-95 season, the Red Devils recalled David Beckham from his loan at Preston. He further impressed the management in training and received limited game time in the second half of the season. But, David Beckham feared that Manchester United would still let him go.

Beckham, speaking to Classic Football Shirts in an interview was asked how he dealt with the fear, said, “You live day to day at Manchester United. You know, from week to week, you knew you had to perform every single day in training. Every single day that you played a game, you had to perform because if not, you knew you were going to get let go.”

He added, “So we always lived on the edge of the fear of being let go by Manchester United, so in all honesty, throughout my whole career. Though people might think it’s silly to say you’re always trying to impress because you never want to get sold, you’re constantly thinking you’re not safe. We can’t.”

There is no doubt David Beckham should get the credit for not fearing and becoming one of the best. However, former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson should also get the credit for backing the young winger, as he famously did with youth prospects.

David Beckham wanted to return on loan to Preston North End for the second half of the 1994-95 season in pursuit of more game time. Any other manager would have likely allowed him to stay. However, the Scotsman refused to let him go on loan again in January. Becks, nevertheless, did not get much game time in the second half of the season.

In the following season, Alex Ferguson started trusting Beckham’s ability to perform. The young striker did brilliantly in the 1995-96 season with other newly introduced players, the iconic Class of ’92 that boasted future legends like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Gary Neville.

Since then, David Beckham has not looked back. He ended up making 394 appearances for the club with 85 goals and 120 assists to his name. After leaving the Red Devils, he went to the likes of Real Madrid, Los Angeles FC, and AC Milan and retired at Paris Saint Germain. If Sir Alex Ferguson had not trusted his ability, he may not have played for several top clubs in the world.
