Just days after Messi won the FIFA Best Award, a major incident took place in his hometown, Rosario. The whole incident has shocked the soccer world, as he and his family might be on the radar of a mafia gang.
Lionel Messi and family on target
On Thursday, several gunmen attacked a food store named Unico which is reportedly owned by the in-laws of Messi. The gunmen also left a threatening message for him outside the shop.
The attackers wrote a message on a piece of cardboard that said, “Messi, we are waiting for you. Javkin is a drug dealer. He is not going to look after you.” Pablo Javkin, whose name the gunmen have written, is the mayor of Rosario, as he is also being targeted by the gang. After the incident, he spoke out about the increasing violence happening in Rosario.

The police confirm that fourteen shots were fired in front of the store, which is located in the Lavalle district of Rosario. Further reports suggest two individuals came on a motorcycle in the early hours.
No casualties have been reported as such. However, the PSG forward has received death threats from the gunmen who attacked his family-owned store in Argentina.
“I doubt everyone, even those who are supposed to protect us,” said Javkin in a radio interview. “Where are the ones who need to take care of us?”
“It’s clear that those who have the weapons and have the possibility of investigating the criminals aren’t doing it, and it’s very easy for any gang to carry out something like this,” he added.
Investigations are underway
The Rosario police are closely monitoring the situation as it is still unclear why the attackers are targeting the former Barcelona man. Or even attack Unico, which is in the country’s third largest city.

No casualties were reported during the incident, but police are trying to find the motive of the gunmen. The federal authorities are reviewing the security footage to track the gunmen.
The justice minister for Santa Fe province, Celia Arena, believes the attack was tailored to intimidate the population of Rosario. “The aim is to deliberately cause terror in the population and discourage those of us who are fighting against criminal violence, knowing that it will be an event of global significance,” said Arena on social media.

Neither Messi nor his wife’s relatives have said anything about the situation. The couple is living with their three kids in Paris, with PSG hosting Nantes this week. For now, officials are reviewing the situation, as the motive behind the attack is still unclear. Nevertheless, we hope things don’t escalate further.
