You thought the eternal debate was complete a year ago. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have already contributed immensely to the game. But when it comes to calling them equal, people go crazy. In a similar way, Premier League icon Jamie Carragher has given a dramatic verdict declaring there was ‘never a debate’.

Lionel Messi winning the World Cup may have silenced most of the people in the argument. However, it’s not expected to be over until they both retire. Adding more fuel to the discussion, here’s the Liverpool great’s extreme take on the argument.

According to former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, there was no debate about Ronaldo and Messi. Kate Abdo posed a question to the veteran defender about whether the ‘GOAT’ debate is finally over. He then replied, “It was never a debate. It was never a debate. Ronaldo is nowhere near the level of Messi.”

Carragher also cited his reason for choosing the Inter Miami star over the Al Nassr captain. “Ronaldo is the greatest goalscorer of all time. Messi is the greatest player of all time,” he explained. The striker is the all-time highest goalscorer in the world with 867 goals, whereas Messi is a few short with 821 goals. The Portuguese star is 38 and still on a scoring spree in Saudi Arabia, with 18 goals in 19 games this season already.

Carragher called Messi the greatest, considering his all-round play. Messi not only scored 821 goals in his career but also provided 361 assists in fewer games than Ronaldo.

The debate can go on and on, with various people having different parameters for judging. However, Carragher clarifies that he is giving an honest opinion and that the debate is not even close. Does Lionel Messi calling him a donkey have anything to do it the Liverpool man’s choices? What exactly happened?

Kate Abdo tried to pull Carragher’s leg by saying, “Messi calls you a donkey Ronaldo ignored you.” Carragher used this to claim to be unbiased. He replied to Abdo, “That shows I’ve got no bias. You know, He (Messi) still calls me a donkey, and I’m going for Messi.” Earlier, the veteran revealed that the Argentine called him a ‘burro’ in an Instagram private message.

Carragher was countered by former US forward Charlie Davies. Davies said that when Ronaldo was playing for Manchester United, there was a genuine debate. However, the former Liverpool defender stated that CR7 was a better player at Real Madrid than at Manchester United.
