This year’s FIFA Men’s Best Player award is proving to be a tight affair. The soccer players from Manchester City have earned the right to receive a nomination for the award after their remarkable treble campaign. On the other hand, Argentina’s World Cup triumph cements the legacies of several players, and Lionel Messi has a chance to win his third. But, one famous journalist, Jose Luis Sanchez, believes Messi did not deserve his nomination. Therefore, he sparked a whole debate on social media.

Although his club career with PSG saw him winning the league title there, the failure to win the UEFA Champions League remained a black mark in his stint in France. When you look at Erling Haaland, there is more productivity in numbers. But that’s out for a debate, as the journalist commented on the nomination.

Despite winning the World Cup and the league title with PSG, the journalist looks displeased with the nomination. He stated, “Messi, The Best? He should not even be nominated.” It comes as surprising considering the achievements he had last season. On an individual level, Messi scored 21 goals and created 20 assists for PSG last season. He became instrumental in their title charge. Similarly, in the World Cup, Messi raised eyebrows with his performances as the 36-year-old dominated the matches.

He led the team from the front and scored a crucial goal in their game against Mexico. If Argentina lost that, they would be at risk of missing out on the World Cup. Yet Messi channeled his inner soccer gods and produced a breathtaking performance. He scored seven goals and made three assists in the World Cup. Notably, in the game against Croatia, Messi took Manchester City’s new signing, Josko Gvardiol, to the cleaners with a mesmerizing dribble.
