The Inter Miami vs LA Galaxy match was an entertainer on all levels. While Lionel Messi weaved his magic on the field, supporters were thrilled to see the likes of Novak Djokovic & NFL star Puka Nacua in attendance. Yet, despite putting up an immense performance, the Argentine was involved in a controversial incident as he refused to swap shirts with LA Galaxy star Eriq Zavaleta. At least, that’s what we thought, until now.
Eriq Zavaleta via X has shed light on the controversial incident. After tweeting a couple of laughing emojis, he said, “I never spoke to him lol.” Furthermore, he defended Lionel Messi from the criticism and added, “He’s clearly mad at the refs but agendas.” From the footage of the disputed incident, the defender approached the Argentine in the post-match player interactions. While Zavaleta did appear to say something, it is not known if it was addressed to the Inter Miami captain.

However, one thing is clear. Lionel Messi looked unhappy and was even seen making a gesture with his hand. Most of the referees officiating currently are replacement referees. This was because of a disagreement between the PRO and PRSA over a new contract. However, it must be said that Inter Miami did benefit from a referring decision.
Marco Delgado was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. The reason is a foul, which can be visibly termed ‘non-existent’ on Sergio Busquets. LA Galaxy was reduced to 10 men, and the Herons took advantage of the numerical advantage and scored soon after. While Zavaleta might not have asked for Messi’s shirt, his teammate John McCarthy did. But, it ended in disappointment for the goalkeeper.

John McCarthy had an impressive outing against the Herons. He made four great saves but couldn’t keep out Lionel Messi’s strike in the 92nd minute. In the post-match interview, McCarthy revealed the disappointment of missing out on the 8x Ballon d’Or winner’s shirt. He said, “I did not get another Messi jersey…I don’t know who did.” Moreover, it’s not known if Messi swapped shirts with any player at all. Fortunately for McCarthy, he does have one Messi shirt in his collection.
