Lionel Messi has had a career filled with record-breaking feats and accomplishments. In February, the 35-year-old won the FIFA Best Men’s Player award following his impressive World Cup-winning run with Argentina. He is the current holder of the esteemed prize.
Now, with his move to the MLS, he will become the second player in history to play outside of Europe while holding the title of FIFA’s best player in the world. The only other player to have achieved this feat is Brazilian legend Romario. Romario led Brazil to World Cup glory in 1994 and was elected the best player in the world the same year.
While holding the title, Romario moved from FC Barcelona to Brazilian club Flamengo. This marked an impressive feat that no one has managed to replicate until now, 28 years later, with Messi’s move to the MLS. However, so far Messi has not officially signed a contract with MLS. But the preparations to live in a new continent already seem to be in place.
