A cloud of uncertainty has cast a shadow over the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Since the past few weeks, the MLS and the US Soccer Federation have been at odds over the oldest national soccer tournament’s new format in 2024. While an agreement has yet to be reached, MLS is under criticism for not only using Lionel Messi as an intermediary to take control of marketing but also to ‘grow the game in their way.’

There are reports that the MLS is even ready to leave the tournament. However, ESPN Futbol Americas’ Herculez Gomez didn’t shy away from ranting about the MLS’ indifference to the U.S. Open Cup. He stated, “I think it’s unfortunate. What we’re seeing here is a money struggle, and it coincides with Messi. Messi is the death of the US Open Cup and it’s a shame that they’re using a player like Messi”.

“His likeness and everything goes with it as a bargaining chip”, said Gomez. The USMNT veteran stated that MLS has been capitalizing on Messi’s name through both the league and the Leagues Cup, unlike the Open Cup.

“What’s the one thing that MLS didn’t have control of when it came to marketing Messi? That was the US Open Cup,” added the former striker. Additionally, Gomez highlighted how the MLS wants to take control of the US Open Cup’s marketing and sell TV rights for their profit. “They don’t want to grow the game in the right way; they want to grow the game in their way,” added the ESPN pundit.

Indeed, these are some bold claims from the iconic by Gomez. Yet, the problem persists, as the failure of the MLS and US Open Cup to reach an agreement might have unfortunate repercussions.

The US Open Cup might get canceled!

Reporter Michael Battista highlighted the strained relationship between U.S. Soccer and MLS, indicating that the Division 1 league is being held ‘hostage’. MLS first teams are abstaining from participating in the US Open Cup. Additionally, with reluctance from the federation to allow MLS Next Pro teams to participate in place of the first MLS teams, the tournament might get canceled.

Notably, the federation granted permits to 9 US-based MLS franchises that qualified for the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup to opt out of the US Open Cup and expand their rosters. However, MLS, who earlier complained about player fatigue and schedule congestion, seems inclined towards scrapping or minimizing the competition. Be that as it may, a final decision is still awaited.
