Can Inter Miami survive without Messi, or is their Leagues Cup run doomed already?

June 2nd—the last time Lionel Messi played for Inter Miami, the Herons played a 3-3 draw vs St. Louis. We are already in the middle of August and there’s no sign of the Argentinian superstar, who previously was seen on the pitch during the Copa America final. That too, ended for him with a major ankle injury, aside from winning the silverware. Now that Miami’s Leagues Cup round of 16 clash vs Columbus Crew is near, Tata Martino has an update that will surely make many Messi fans infuriated.

Though things are surprisingly terrific for the Florida-based in the absence of their star player, it’s not the same without La Pulga. Mostly, there have been updates that the 37-year-old continues to nurse his ankle knock, it’s the return date that many question. Unfortunately, per independent reporter Claudio on X, even Martino isn’t sure to update everyone on that front.

The Argentinian tactician claims that Messi has returned to training but is working separately from the team. Additionally, there’s no exact date as to when the skipper will return. Most likely it will be in early September that we see Messi don the pink shirt again, though it was reported earlier that his return would be somewhere at the end of August.

As for Lionel Messi, he will miss further Leagues Cup clashes and a few MLS fixtures as well. Till then, Inter Miami should continue with their winning ways and utilize whatever they have. The likes of Luis Suarez, Diego Gomez, and Matias Rojas are also advised to step up, just like they have been doing in their No. 10’s absence.
