The recently released six-episode Netflix docuseries Captains of the World features six national team captains as their teams prepare to compete for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe, despite not being the French skipper back then, has featured in the very first episode of Captains of the World, titled Great Expectations. While doing so, the Frenchman pinched himself with a reality check. Before 2022, Mbappe had won a World Cup. Whereas, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have not.

However, Mbappe seemed well aware that the World Cup victory wouldn’t put him on a pedestal above the Argentine and the Portuguese.

Two minutes into the first episode of Captains of the World, we could see footage of an anxious Kylian Mbappe flying to Qatar for the World Cup. “Messi and Cristiano, they are better players than me,” said Kylian Mbappe. However, Mbappe remarked that he keeps reminding himself he was also the “best.” The current French captain’s admission is no surprise, considering how he has looked up to these soccer legends, especially the Portuguese goal machine. Anyhow, at the World Cup Mbappe did live up to his self-assuring remark. He played a second consecutive final and scored a hat-trick, but in the end, failed at the last hurdle.

Coming back to Captains of the World, the episode immediately cuts from Mbappe to Lionel Messi’s take on the FIFA World Cup. Messi reveals his ‘great expectations’ in this episode. Soon, the video reveals the Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo and his thoughts about going into his fifth World Cup.

If Mbappe humbled himself before Messi and Ronaldo’s greatness, the two sounded humbled and privileged at the prospect of playing yet another World Cup.

Lionel Messi, like Ronaldo, was going into his fifth FIFA World Cup. Before 2022, he had never won the World Cup trophy, despite making it to the finals in 2014. Coming from a country where a World Cup win is one of the critical factors to gain love and respect, Messi knew what challenges awaited him. “It’s my last chance to achieve my greatest dream. But this is a World Cup, and it is really tough,” he said.

Soon, we could see Cristiano Ronaldo speaking to the interviewers. “Some people like me. Some people don’t. But I’m proud of everything I have done. It wouldn’t be fair to ask for more,” said Ronaldo. When all was said and done, Ronaldo failed to have the better off at his fifth World Cup. Leo Messi, on the other hand, ‘shook hands with paradise,’ winning soccer’s most prized possession.

Anyhow, it is most likely that CR7 will feature in the 2026 World Cup in his forties and give a shot at completing the beautiful game.
