Is Lindsey Horan right to demand more from her USWNT teammates after their Olympic gold?

Revival can be a long-term process. The USWNT has already taken a major step in gaining back the reputation of serial winners after the gold in Paris. Going into the 2024 Olympics with a budding squad, many would have been skeptical about Emma Hayes’ plans. However, a display of dominance by ‘The Stars and Stripes’ by not losing or drawing a single game in the competition has once again brought back great hopes. Nevertheless, even though the outcome exceeded her expectations, Lindsey Horan, the winning captain, didn’t seem satisfied.

According to the Olympics’ official website, the USWNT skipper expects this team to go for the 2027 World Cup. She said, “We just got our manager [just over] two months ago, and the things that we did in this tournament, in the past year… there is just so much more potential,” citing the incredible work they’ve done in rebuilding the unit.

She further said, “That’s a cool thing to say after [already] winning a gold medal. It’s a young team and one of the first major tournaments for some of these players. To think about what this team could do in 2027… amazing.” The result was just the tip of the iceberg for Lindsey Horan and her crew.

USWNT was facing the supporters’ fury during this time last year for the World Cup debacle. Reaching the round of 16 was never a matter of pride for the Stars and Stripes women who are known to win the World Cup most of the time. Hayes even chose to omit Alex Morgan, the most experienced member of the team.

She went with the youngest roster since 2008, with an average age of 26.8. Even with many factors against them, the team used them as stepping stones winning 6 games on the trot in two weeks. Hence, Horan feels the team hasn’t even reached its peak yet and aims for the 2027 World Cup.

Lindsey Horan could slog it out as eyes are already on the 2027 World Cup

With the World Cup in Brazil still years away, Lindsey Horan is setting her sights on making the team. But, Hayes’ preference for younger players means the Olympique Lyon midfielder’s place in 2027 is uncertain. Nevertheless, Horan was not just thinking about herself but USWNT in general while expressing excitement about the 2027 competition. Looks like the USWNT is in a great place, with young athletes taking greater responsibility.

Have an interesting take?

The Paris Games gave an insight into their magnificent attacking trio. Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman, and Sophia Smith scored 10 goals in 6 games and stole the show. On the other hand, the former Chelsea coach was impressed by the 24-year-old Naomi Girma, calling her the best defender she’s ever seen.

Therefore, it could be tough for the current seniors to sneak into the USA squad in the future. Nevertheless, as the focus is back on club soccer, Lindsey Horan is on the verge of adding another trophy to her cabinet. And her hunger to keep going could still help her make it to Brazil in 2027.
