The NWSL playoffs are just around the corner with just four matchdays remaining. Out of 14 teams, only the top 8 will get a chance to rally for the prestigious NWSL Championship. While each side will present significant challenges during the knockout stages, Lynn Williams has singled out her rival side, KC Current, as the team that may be ‘impossible‘ to beat.
The Gotham FC forward knows what makes the Vlatko Andonovski-led side stand out in the eight teams contesting in the playoffs. Speaking to Sam Mewis on The Women’s Game Podcast, she began, “When I think of the best teams in the world, their X-factor is having multiple options and not having the burden be on one person.”
The 31-year-old put the likes of Kansas City, Washington Spirit, North Carolina Courage, and even her own club, Gotham FC, in the bracket of teams dependent on their star player. While such expectation isn’t wrong, Williams recalled that during the Paris Olympics, no such thing happened as ‘teamwork makes dream work’ was their motto.

“When we played in North Carolina, honestly, the US team at the Olympics, you didn’t see one person doing everything. There was this shared responsibility and workload and I think that as a team facing that it’s scary,” she added, keeping Kansas City Current in this bracket. Williams insisted that Andonovski and Co. have all their players ready to step up even if their crucial players fail to do so.
She even mentioned several names from Gotham FC’s roster, including forward duo Temwa Chawinga (current NWSL top scorer with 16 goals) Nichelle Prince, and midfielder Lo’eau Labonta. “All these players step up so you’re like ‘Crap, we’ve taken away this one option and then you’re like, well then how do I take away that option and this option at the same time?’ That’s usually impossible,” concluded Williams.

Seems like Williams knows the kinds of challenges she may face against KC Current, of course, only if her side manages to draw against them as opponents. But that doesn’t mean other sides won’t be a walk in the park!
Lynn Williams and Gotham FC set to face tough competition in the NWSL playoffs!
What’s your perspective on:
Are the KC Current the new USWNT in terms of dominance and fear factor in the NWSL?
Have an interesting take?
Even though Lynn Williams highly rates The Current, the Kansas-based side is currently in 4th place in the standings with 43 points, trailing her own side, Gotham FC by one point. Meanwhile, Washington Spirit takes the second spot by 44 points, with Orlando Pride leading with a remarkable tally of 51. Either way, it must be something that Williams must have seen in KC Current as she speaks highly of them.

Speaking of the remaining sides, North Carolina Courage, Chicago Red Stars, Portland Thorns, and Racing Louisville are currently in the top 8. However, except for the first four teams, neither side has a guaranteed place in the playoffs. The likes of Bay FC, Angle City, and even the Seattle Reign can look to challenge for the playoff spot, that too, only if the teams just above them stumble.
Either way, the next few weeks will be quite intense in the NWSL.
