Will Alex Morgan's retirement mark a new era for women's soccer or leave a void too big to fill?

Alex Morgan deserved a better farewell. The two-time World champion had to be on the bench and see her side- the San Diego Wave get battered 4-1 by the North Carolina Courage. Featuring only 13 minutes of Morgan’s action, her last match only drew 26,516 fans, which is lower than the Snapdragon stadium’s usual record-breaking attendance. However, not every part of Morgan’s last dance was disappointing. In fact, the buzz surrounding the 35-year-old’s retirement allowed the NWSL to secure a new deal from its sponsors.

For the first time in history, Alex Morgan’s final game became the only NWSL game to be simultaneously broadcast across multiple platforms. NWSL chief Jessica Berman spoke about the deal during the SD Wave-NC Courage Tie. “We heard like everyone just a few days ago that she was going to make today her final game. She was announcing she was pregnant and was actually going to get on the field,” said Jessica Berman in a CBS interview.

Berman continued, “We knew that the whole world needs to see this. Boys, girls, men, women, and everyone from all backgrounds should have the opportunity to see Alex. That was our vision.” Thereafter, the NWSL commissioner detailed how the league successfully managed to air the game on all platforms. “Within 24 hours of talking to our partners, they all came together and said, ‘no one should own this exclusively, everyone should share this moment.’ So we could put the fan first and make sure Alex gets the moment she deserves,” Berman added.

NWSL’s latest CBA which runs through 2030, is the most player-friendly agreement it has signed to date. We mostly see the youngsters such as Trinity Rodman and others celebrate the CBA. But, Alex Morgan has been at the center of the league’s and its players association’s agreements and negotiations. “She[Morgan] is actually a player rep. It means that she puts in the time off the field, with the union, with the league, and shows up to bargaining sessions,” said Berman.
