Moreover, the revolutionary concept of equal pay has a long storied history attached to it.

The idea of equal pay goes a long way back

While some must be thinking it was the USWNT stars who brought equal pay in effectiveness. However, many of you are not aware of the untold tale of Billie Jean King. It was because of her that the USTA has been paying women the same prize as men at the U.S. Open for 50 years.

She won $10,000 in the 1972 tournament, while the men’s champion, Ilie Nastase, received $25,000. This was truly unacceptable to her, so she announced that the women won’t be back next year unless they get equal prize money.

Besides complaining, she even came up with a solution. As a businesswoman, King had a word with different sponsors and urged them to raise sponsorship funds that will help increase the women’s prize money.

The sponsors agreed, and both the men’s and women’s champions received $25,000 in 1973. Hence, to symbolize how much women have achieved, March 14 has been dubbed “Equal Pay Day” by the National Committee on Pay Equity.
