Fans already can’t get over the beginning of the new season, and it seems the NWSL already has another good news for its spectators. Just a few days ago, the league announced the Utah Royals will play in the 2024 season as a new expansion team.
However, it seems fans must brace themselves for this one, as the NWSL once again brought smiles to the faces of its spectators. The women’s league has announced the addition of another expansion team that will be representing California’s Bay.
Soccer fans melt with the latest announcement of NWSL
NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman gave details regarding the expansion team. “The number of bids and the increase in the league’s expansion fees are indicative of both the demand that exists for women’s soccer in the professional sports landscape and the validated growth trajectory of our league.”
“I am confident that this ownership group and market will help us deliver on the league’s continued transformative growth and success and look forward to watching the Bay Area club kick off in 2024.” she added. The new North California team will be the 14th team in the NWSL and has yet to be given a name.
Both the Utah Royals and Bay Arena team will debut in the 2024 season. The news has definitely spread like wildfire, and it has definitely sent soccer fans into a frenzy. In fact, they are asking for the next franchise of their own choice.

Indeed, it is great news for both women’s soccer and the NWSL that the tournament has been extended to 14 teams. Hopefully, fans’ wishes might be fulfilled in the upcoming years, and we might see more teams in the league. But first, it is important to know about the whole background of the club.
Meet the owners of the new team
Reports suggest that the majority of investment for the new franchise comes from a global investment firm, Sixth Street. The corporation has stakes in Spanish giants Real Madrid and FC Barcelona as well as the NBA side, San Antonio Spurs.
Sixth Street is also partnered with the MLB’s New York Yankees and the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, thanks to its major investment in a live venue operations business, Legends. Moreover, the firm has partnered with USWNT legends Brandi Chastain, Leslie Osborne, Danielle Slaton, and Aly Wagner.
Sixth Street today announced the largest institutional investment to date in a women’s pro sports franchise. We, with USWNT legends @brandichastain, @daniellevslaton, @LeslieOsborne12, and @alywagner, are bringing an @NWSL franchise to the Bay Area. https://t.co/X8RHgNLz35
