“Let Me Just Put This to Rest” – American Soccer Legend Trashes Mexican Team as He Calls Them 10X ‘Worse’ Than ‘Dysfunctional’ US Federation

It hasn’t even been a full couple of months yet since Argentina won the Qatar World Cup. However, teams have started to aim for the next edition of the tournament. Two of those teams are the USA and Mexico. Many soccer teams are changing their roaster, especially their managers to bring new and fresh ideas to the table. USMNT and the Mexican soccer team are in the same phase. Mexico endured a disappointing run in Qatar while the USMNT had a decent run. Both teams are bringing new bosses to the team to prepare them for the tournament. These teams specifically had more pressure as they are the host nation of the tournament along with Canada.

While Mexico failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament the USMNT had a good showing in the group stage. The team won 1-0 against Iran and stopped the English team at a goalless draw. Although the team had a heartbreaking loss in the round of 16, fans were surprised by the qualification in the next round. The fans have high expectations from both of these teams in the next edition however one USMNT legend has some harsh words for both.

American legend criticized the Mexican soccer federation

The stern words for the Mexican soccer Federation came from the legendary USMNT defender Alexi Lalas. He was talking on his podcast about how Mexico has lost the chance to sign Marcelo Bielsa as their new head coach. The team instead went to a choice between Miguel Herrera and Guillermo Almada. He compared both the US soccer federation and its Mexican counterpart.

Lalas in his podcast said, “The fact that Bielsa is not the new Mexico coach is interesting because he is a big name. And this is someone that I think would bring attention, and they know him from his history with Mexican soccer. I think the Mexican soccer community and its fans, when everything is said and done, will think how they ended up with Almada or Herrera when they could have had Bielsa. Let me just put this to rest. Whatever dysfunction you may attach to the US soccer federation, believe me, it is 10 times worse when it comes to the Mexican federation.”

The USMNT fans have a lot of expectations from them and the team was unable to live up to the expectations of their supporters. They lost a friendly match that should have been a victory. The USMNT also suffered a goalless draw in the next one which was also perceived as an easy win.

Future for Mexico and USMNT

As per the recent announcement by CONMEBOL, the USA will be hosting the 2024 edition of Copa America. Both USA and Mexico will be playing in the tournament. This tournament will be the best to evaluate the team’s preparation for the 2026 WC.

It remains to be seen whether Mexico will suffer in the future as Lalas said. It is crucial that the team perform well in the tournament next year. Otherwise, it would be a monumental task to implement a drastic overhaul and make it work before the FIFA tournament in 2026.
