The Beckham documentary showcased an unseen side of David Beckham. Despite Fisher Stevens’s talent, there were doubts about his limited knowledge of Becks and how he would approach a sports documentary. Especially, when considering it is titled on one of the most-polarizing soccer stars ever. However, the documentary has acquired immense popularity. What’s, perhaps, even more surprising is that this documentary would possibly not have existed, if not for the behind-the-scenes role played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

On the surface, David Beckham is the perfect soccer star to base a documentary around. He is an Englishman who has played for Real Madrid. He was also amongst the first big stars to play in the MLS. Unlike other great English players, Beckham had a great following across the United States as well as Asia.

It is quite amusing to think Leonardo DiCaprio would play a role as important as David Beckham himself in releasing this documentary. Fisher Stevens revealed that initially, he wasn’t very convinced of the documentary. However, a phone call from DiCaprio’s office changed the mood for him. Fisher revealed the exact conversation in an interview.

He said “We had made — We made some documentaries together, and the office said, “Leo suggested you to direct David Beckham’s documentary, and David wants to talk to you.” And I was like, “Me? David Beckham?

Further adding, “I really wasn’t that excited. I love football, soccer, I really got into it after he left England and went to Madrid and just thought, Brand Beckham, Posh Spice, wasn’t really that interested.”

He then went on to do a Zoom call with David Beckham where he realized that the former Manchester United player was different from the kind of person he envisioned. This was a key factor in the portrayal of the documentary.

Be it his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson, his marriage with Victoria Beckham, or his multiple rumored affairs, the media loved Beckham.

Despite his fair share of controversies, Beckham was a role model for many. He has been the UNICEF UK ambassador and supports initiatives like Malaria No More. His playing style has inspired many, with star midfielder Declan Rice recently admitting that Beckham was the inspiration behind his screamer against Chelsea.
