The latest Manchester Derby made history as it landed at Wembley Stadium for the first-ever FA Cup Final. The clash between Premier League champs Manchester City and Manchester United lived up to all the expectations with some thrilling moments. Yet it was filled with drama and controversial decisions.

One of these centered around the act of Manchester United’s Brazilian player, Casemiro. He has been enjoying an incredible form this season with United. But a challenge he produced during the match was not taken lightly by former Premier League player Andy Townsend.

Casemiro slammed for an ill-timed tackle

On Saturday night, Manchester United had an opportunity to reign victorious and win the trophy at Wembley. Things became challenging for the Red Devils whilst Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan scored their first goal of the game in a record time of 13 seconds.

Following this, later in the first half, Casemiro pressed into a tackle against a City player, Akanji, with serious studs up. His challenge left the City star in pain and on the floor. To the surprise of many, the referee did not call out a book on Casemiro. The decision was haphazard according to Andy Townsend.

“That is a poor challenge,” he said. “His boot is raised and goes down Akanji’s leg. When your foot’s on the floor that’s when your leg can get broken”. Townsend also noted Casemiro’s actions after the tackle, adding he should have definitely been booked for faking an injury. Townsend “can’t believe” Casemiro was not booked and believes “He should be sent off for the challenge”. Following this questionable decision, more drama infused the match.

What happened after the tackle by Manchester United star

Shortly after this challenge, City was struck with its own misfortune. Around 30 minutes into the match, the Sky Blues’ Jack Grealish was caught for handball. To which the referee granted United a penalty. The responsibility of the spot-kick was cast over Bruno Fernandes who powered the ball with conviction and equalized the score.

With the score 1-1, the controversial decision by the referee looked to haunt the Cityzens. But City recuperated in the second half with Gundogan scoring his second goal and clinching the title. Although the unfortunate situation adds to a thrilling match, it was still of significant concern.
