Unknown to many, Pepe is not natively Portuguese. The defender was born to his father Anael Ferreira and his wife in Alagoas, Brazil. Pepe’s actual name is Kepler Laveran Lima Ferreira. The scientists Johannes Kepler and Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran inspired his parents to keep the name. While Ferreira wanted his son to be a scientist, his child swerved the lab in favor of the soccer pitch.
Having started his youth career with Corinthians Alagoano, the center-back set to seek greener pastures. Hence, he left his parents and three siblings behind and moved to Portugal to play for Maritimo. Soon after, Jose Mourinho recognized his talent and Pepe’s career took off.
In 2007, Pepe made the huge decision to represent Portugal internationally. But this came with a lot of hostility. Previously, another Brazilian named Deco did the same and fans voiced their displeasure. The defender found it problematic to pick out his national team. But amid the challenges, there was a silver lining as Ana Sofia Moreira entered his life.
