They say “People respond to how we’re dressed,” and we couldn’t agree more. Whether it’s Harvey Specter from Suits telling Mike Ross about the importance of wearing a good suit or Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother always shouting, “And, suit up!” — by now, you should understand the value of wearing a sharp outfit. Well, David Beckham is no exception, who, ahead of the 2011 MLS final, went above and beyond by surprising all of his LA Galaxy teammates with $2,000 suits, leaving them “stoked.”
This revelation was made by none other than the iconic midfielder’s former MLS teammate, Landon Donovan, on the latest podcast episode of Unfiltered Soccer, which he co-hosts alongside Tim Howard. Interestingly, Donovan shared the kind of impact Beckham had on the team, which led him to share this never-before-heard story.
“In our first final with Beckham, he was trying to get us matching suits to wear all week,” began the former striker. “Most of our guys in 2011 were making 60, 70, 80 grand. So to get a $2000 suit was like… they were stoked, right?” While the English icon was eager to make all of his teammates wear suits, many still weren’t convinced by him, forcing the Manchester United icon to take the matter into his own hands.

“On the Friday before our Saturday game, after training, they said, ‘Guys, we need you to go in and get fitted for your suit.’ I was like, ‘Okay, that’s cool’ but now I’m standing on my feet for two hours trying to get fitted into it, and they somehow turned it around and got us the suits the next morning. It was amazing; I mean, that’s the power of Beckham.”, remarked Donovan.
As everyone got their hands on a brand-new suit, the whole locker room was ecstatic. For a job of making more than 20 suits, it was the extra effort of the English soccer icon that helped all of his teammates get their matching suits within a day; heck, consider it was less than 24 hours!

“Our guys were stoked, walking in with a suit. David probably didn’t even wear the suit, he probably wore his $20,000 [worth]… whatever he wore,” concluded Donovan. Well, we aren’t surprised if Beckham got his LA Galaxy-themed suit ten times more expensive than what his fellow teammates got; after all, his wardrobe has more secrets to reveal!
David Beckham is the real epitome of fashion!
Of course, everyone knows that ‘DB7’, in his own class, is a fashion statement. Consider his Netflix documentary Beckham, where the former soccer star gave everyone a glimpse into his life, even showcasing his love for a great wardrobe. From Versace to Emporio Armani, it’s not just about owning everything by name; it’s also about his special love for suits. In his docuseries, you may notice that Beckham has a dedicated space for each category of all his apparel.

His closet is no less than a room filled with neatly pressed and steamed tailored pieces in grey, black, and navy, with a top rail for shirts above. Everything he has in his closet is meticulously color-coordinated. In fact, gone are the days of tight vests, open-collared suits, rosary beads, and baggy trousers. It’s all about tailored Dior suits, luxurious cashmere sweaters, and crisp shirts for Becks now.
Why wouldn’t he even go beyond being a global icon? Either way, we reckon David Beckham is no less than a suit fanatic like Harvey Specter or Barney Stinson!
