Megan Rapinoe is among the most successful athletes in the world. She has played in three World Cups with the USWNT, winning twice. Rapinoe is also an Olympic gold medallist with the US women’s side. She has achieved almost every feat any woman soccer player would dream of. However, she is ready to give that all up if it could mean that LGBTQ+ youngsters feel included in the sports industry.
Rapinoe and Sue Bird are in a relationship for six years now. They have faced a lot of criticism and backlash in the past, but they managed to get past them through each other’s support. However, Rapinoe feels that many LGBTQ+ youngsters don’t feel included in sports and they have to suffer a lot after coming out.

USWNT star Megan Rapinoe publicly came out a decade ago when she announced her relationship with Australian soccer player Sarah Walsh. However, they split in 2013, a year after Rapinoe’s announcement. Rapinoe then dated Sera Cahoone and got engaged to her in 2015. Sue Bird retired from WNBA as the joint-most successful player in the league’s history. Rapinoe, however, is still playing and recently scored a gold for USWNT in their shocking loss to Germany. However, the couple cares a lot about the LGBTQ+ community and feels inclusion is the best way forward for them.
Megan Rapinoe discusses issues surrounding LGBTQ+ youngsters
Rapinoe and Sue Bird have been vocal about their opinion on the LGBTQ+ community. Rapinoe has used her influence on several platforms to raise awareness on this matter. In a June interview with Hypebae, Rapinoe opened up on the importance of sports and the problems LGBTQ+ youngsters face.
“I believe starting with inclusion is the best and first step, we can figure the rest out later,” Rapinoe told Hypebae. “As I said, sports are not the most important thing in the world — by a long shot. It’s actually just a game and a made-up industry that doesn’t really affect the world that much, but we’re putting that over people’s lives, kids who are literally committing suicide because people are telling them that they’re sinful or wrong. To me, it’s just not sane whatsoever. It’s monstrous.”
