It seems the England women’s team’s hopes for lifting the World Cup are also in danger, as the Lionesses are dealt a huge blow. The team’s skipper, Leah Williamson, is set to miss the World Cup following her season-ending injury. The defender was recently stretchered off the field during a WSL game. This is a major setback to the Lionesses, as their World Cup hopes are on the verge of being derailed.

England’s women’s team captain, Leah Williamson, suffered a shocking injury during the WSL clash between Arsenal and Manchester United. The Gunners defender collapsed to the ground after just 12 minutes as she was taken off the field after rupturing her ACL.
She’ll be out for a while and she will certainly miss the World Cup campaign. Following her injury, she penned an emotional message on her Instagram, stating that her Champions League and World Cup dreams are over. This has garnered her huge support from the soccer world, as many stars have showed their support, backing the England superstar.

The former England international David Beckham joined everyone in extending his support. He posted a story for her on Instagram. With the picture, he wrote, “Keep Smiling Captain,” sending her a heartwarming message. Moreover, the ‘Three Lions’ captain Harry Kane also had a few words for Williamson. The Tottenham striker shared her picture and wrote, “Keep your head up, Leah Williamson. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery.”
Furthermore, Chelsea star Mason Mount also posted her picture and wrote, “We’re all with you, Leah Williamson.” Besides this, other women’s soccer stars also wrote heartwarming messages for her. It is indeed a tough moment for her, as she will now get operated on for her injury.
Williamson set to undergo surgery
Williamson was stretchered off the pitch following her injury. The defender was seen in distress after feeling discomfort in her knee. After she was taken off the field, and scan reports showed she had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament, which takes at least six months to recover from.
The club’s website gave an official statement regarding her injury. It read, “We can confirm that Leah Williamson suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in our Barclays Women’s Super League match against Manchester United on Wednesday night.” (Statement continues below).
