Chelsea’s performances this season have left a lot to be desired. Following their 2-0 loss against Everton, the Blues sit 12th in the table with 19 points. Manager Mauricio Pochettino is facing the brunt of the criticism for the poor string of results. Almost halfway into the season, Pochettino and Co’s MLB-like approach to signing players is being held as the biggest contributor to all the problems.
The London Club spent more than $450 million in the summer transfer window. This takes the total spending since Todd Boehly assumed the ownership to be over $1 billion. Hence, it is perfectly understandable as to why soccer fans are disappointed by the lackluster results.

Craig Burley was straightforward about Chelsea’s problems in the ESPN FC show. He said, “The problem has been this scatter gun signing policy that if it moved we signed them and we gave them 7 and 8-year deals and somebody’s going to have to figure it out (how to utilize the players better).” He also presented the example of Mykhailo Mudryk. As per Burley, the $108 million signing is talented and has got the pace and tricks but is indecisive in the final third. With just 2 goals in 32 league games for Mudryk, it’s hard to disagree with Burley here.
The pundit also appeared to take a dig at Chelsea’s huge financial spending. Burley remarked, “Just need another billion of money scattered around do you know.” Burley also added that Pochettino’s decision to bench Thiago Silva did not work as Everton breezed through the Chelsea defense.
However, he did imply that Pochettino is not the sole man to blame. He then referenced previous manager Graham Potter who said, “If you think I’m the problem you’re wrong.” Could he be hinting toward the upper management, which is led by the owner Todd Boehly for Chelsea’s troubles?
While fans and experts are not in favor of further signings, manager Pochettino might have a different view on the matter.
