The 2023/24 NWSL soccer season commences soon, and Alex Morgan and co are ready. The San Diego Wave is one of the latest franchises in a league that expanded last season. Moreover, they reached the semi-finals in the playoffs last year while breaking the attendance record throughout the season. And now, Morgan hopes to break more records as they aim to draw more fans for the opening weekend. 

In a recent interview, she spoke about her club’s chances and discussed her ambitions, heading to the second season. Hence, one record they chase is setting the opening game attendance record. The team from California broke the attendance record last year as 32,000 people attended their game against Angel City FC. Morgan would hope to lead her side to their first championship for the new season. The team is definitely on the rise!

Alex Morgan hopes to break the opening attendance record with San Diego Wave!

During the interview, she spoke about her intentions of breaking the record as the entire soccer community gears up for an exciting season. She said, “This team and club has high hopes and has just set the bar. And we want to continue to do that with the home opener attendance record and just continue on the run of breaking records.” It comes fresh after NWSL’s attendance success last season. 

Before San Diego and Angel City set the record, the Portland Thorns and North Carolina Courage held the record in a 2019 match. The game saw around 25,218 fans coming to support their team.

Notably, San Diego Wave FC smashed the record with 32,000 people attending the team’s 1-0 win over rivals from South California, Angel City FC. Excited to see the attendance numbers, the club president, Jill Ellis, opened up on the backend work.

According to ESPN, she commented, “This is a great reflection of the momentum we see in women’s sports. We’ve sold all of our inventory, it’s incredible. We should celebrate this, but we should now expect it, big crowds for women’s professional sports.”

Attendance records at an all-time high in 2022

Notably, the NWSL broke attendance records for an opening weekend as fans flocked to the stands to witness their favorite teams. Around 22,000 fans attended to watch Angel City FC’s victory over North Carolina Courage.

The average attendance for opening weekend was at an all-time high with 10, 150 fans attending various games. The sizeable rise in spectators results from much work with branding and marketing the league to the soccer fraternity.

Moreover, the average attendance for the 2019 season saw 7386 fans attending the soccer games. As the countdown to the new season starts, the teams would hope to break all the attendance records and push NWSL to the top of the charts. Do you think women’s league soccer is on the rise?
