Finding consensus among soccer fans is as hard as finding a needle in a haystack. It’s pretty much next to impossible! For years, fans have debated to crown the best soccer league in the world. The English Premier League and the Spanish La Liga usually emerge as the front-runners in the race, with the two leagues boasting some of the best talent across the world. However, recent years have seen the English league slightly edge its competitors as the best league in the world. However, La Liga president Javier Tebas believes the Spanish league still holds a significant high ground over the Premier League on a particular aspect.
Tebas, in an interview, commented on the rise of the Premier League, with fans constantly comparing it to La Liga. The Spaniard stated, “Adding up the budgets of all the teams in the top flight, the Premier’s total budget is 1.8 times bigger than La Liga’s, but we’re in a sector where it’s not all about the economy. It’s also about sport.”
He then added that despite the financial parity, La Liga still dominates European silverware. “In this respect, our European record in recent years is ahead of us. We’ve won 60% of the titles. In the current Champions League, there are four Spanish teams and two English teams. What we have to see in soccer is the balance between the two aspects, the sporting and the economic. In the first, we’re better. In the second the Premier wins.,” he concluded. (Source: Abola)

While Tebas’ comments are understandable, it is crucial to note that the Premier League has emerged as one of the biggest soccer markets in terms of its dominance over the broadcasting and revenue model. Fans also believe there is more competitiveness amongst the English teams, with a selected few delivering at the top of their game in Spain.

The La Liga president, during the interview, also commented on the impact following CR7 and La Pulga’s departure, claiming the league continues to be competitive without its biggest stars. Tebas also added that despite luring the duo, other leagues in Europe still failed to generate similar financial numbers to the Spanish League. Despite his comments, there is no doubt that the league has lost its luster following the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
