Is CONCACAF failing its teams by allowing such poor pitch conditions in international matches?

The USMNT returned home with an important 1-0 victory against Jamaica from the first leg of the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal on Thursday, even without some key players like Folarin Balogun, Josh Sargent, Tyler Adams, and Gio Reyna. However, victory in the match was eclipsed by an important issue it was about the condition of the pitch at the National Stadium in Kingston.

The Jamaica vs. USMNT match in Kingston suddenly became something unexpected when the quality of the pitch became the talk of the day. Fans and players alike were shocked at the poor state of the pitch on Jamaica’s National Stadium, creating much outcry among fans, players, and pundits. Given that this tournament is supported by one of soccer’s major regional confederations, the substandard pitch raised serious questions about CONCACAF’s dedication to upholding professional standards.

The match began with an immediate indication of the pitch’s poor condition. Just seconds in, a large divot caused the ball to bounce erratically, marking the first of many interruptions due to the field. Instead of the smooth passing, control, and strategy that fans expect at this level, the game was marred by awkward, unpredictable bounces that hampered both teams’ ability to play effectively. For many spectators, watching players struggle on a subpar surface felt more like an amateur match than a CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier.

Fans’ reaction fuels the demand for higher standards

Frustrated fans took to social media to voice their outrage. “How can this pitch be allowed in CONCACAF?” one fan tweeted, calling it “literally terrible.” Just 45 minutes into the game, the ball was uncontrollable over a massive divot in the US’s half.

Unable to control the ball’s deviation, both teams were pressing hard and trying to gain possession. “People just don’t understand the immense challenge that road CONCACAF matches present for the #USMNT and other North American football powers,” another fan commented. The onus will be on CONCACAF authority now.

Have an interesting take?

Many urged CONCACAF to look into the matter and set stricter standards for match venues, with one supporter labeling the field “a joke” and questioning, “How do you expect to be taken seriously?”  and one opining, This pitch needs to be investigated by the #CIA and the sound guy needs to turn down the annoying crowd. I’m used to European football so this just hurts.

Notably, this is not the first time, CONCACAF getting hear from fans for the poor pitches. In the 2024 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup, the semifinal game between USWNT and Canada was on a pitch puddled with water. And the authority has not taken any measures yet. Fans contended that while away qualifiers and opponents are meant to be tough, they shouldn’t be characterized by unsafe or unplayable fields.
