Manchester City star Erling Haaland took the Premier League by storm last season. The Norwegian striker scored 36 goals in 38 games for City, breaking the record for most goals by a single player over a season. Haaland also top-scored in Europe with a total of 52 goals in 53 games outperforming his xG of 41.72. But coming to a bit of hilarity, Haaland’s teammate has commented about how the City frontman “smells” while celebrating goals on the pitch.

Haaland has been on a short 3-game goal drought for City at the moment and also had to deal with the heartbreak of not qualifying for Euro 2024 after Norway lost their crunch game against Spain 1-0 this week. But in spite of his failures this month, the Norwegian frontman seems to be in a jovial mood as per a recent interview with his City teammate Jack Grealish.

Speaking on the Men In Blazers podcast on YouTube, Erling Haaland’s teammate Jack Grealish commented on what he thought Haaland smelled like. After being asked by the podcast’s host about what it’s like hugging Haaland and if it’s like being lifted by a truck while celebrating a goal on the touchline, Grealish said, “He smells gorgeous mate! Always smells beautiful…. smells of flowers. No no, he’s never actually picked me up I don’t think so hopefully next time I assist him then yeah.”

To which Haaland replied: “I’ll pick him up next time he assists me just for you. You have my word!”, as both players shared some laughs.

This interview comes shortly after Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Man City at the Emirates in matchweek 8 of the Premier League on 8th October. City eventually lost as Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli struck in the 86th minute with a deflected shot that led to a goal to give the Gunners the 3 points. This was yet another game that Haaland failed to score for City this season.

Arsenal won at the Emirates despite City edging possession 51% to Arsenal’s 49%. City also led on xG with their xG of 0.48 which was 0.9+ ahead of Arsenal’s xG of 0.39. City created more chances than Arsenal, creating 2 big chances but missed both and also narrowly edged the Gunners in passes with 521 passes compared to Arsenal’s 500.

Haaland, meanwhile, made 23 touches against the Gunners but most tellingly didn’t register a single shot in the game. However, despite Haaland’s recent failings, it’s certain that the Norwegian striker will look to bounce back from this goal drought and start scoring again.

With Norway’s failure to qualify for Euro 2024, it looks like Haaland’s prime focus will now be on Man City as he will look to match his numbers from last season and perhaps lift some trophies again by the end of this campaign.
