Paris Saint Germain and manager Luis Enrique couldn’t have asked for a better way to start 2024. Thanks to Lee Kang-in and Kylian Mbappe‘s first half goals, PSG out-classed Toulouse to win the French Super Cup (Trophee des Champions) today. Even at the mirth of starting a new year with a title, Enrique did not fail to pay tribute to his predecessor Christophe Galtier. If it were not for PSG’s league-winning run under Galtiere last season, they would not have even featured in the Super Cup final, let alone win it.

Luis Enrique was on cloud nine in an interview after the Super Cup win against Toulouse. But before savoring his first PSG title, the Spanish boss credited Christophe Galtier for PSG’s achievement.

Speaking to the press after the Super Cup win, Luis Enrique said, “We have to remember and pay tribute to the former coach, Christophe Galtier, who won the league last season to qualify for this match. It’s thanks to him also that I can win this Trophée des Champions.”  The French Super Cup features that season’s Ligue 1 winners and Coupe de France (French Cup) winners. PSG, under Galtier won the Ligue 1 title in the 2022-23 season, and won a ticket to the recently concluded Super Cup final. Toulouse on the other hand made the final appearance on the back of their Coupe de France victory.

Enrique was rightful to thank Christophe Galtier for his contributions to the Paris-based outfit. Though a short one, Galtier had a memorable and storied run with Mbappe’s side. Taking charge as PSG’s boss, the Frenchman led them to a Ligue 1 title win and a French Super Cup win last year. However, Galtier did not see a happy ending with PSG.

Christophe Galtier had a sour ending with PSG, despite work at the club

Galtier might have hit the ground running with the Parisians, but he failed to give them a promising run at their most coveted tournament. PSG faced an embarrassing Round of 16 exit in the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League, despite their star power and Galtier’s proven managerial prowess. That disheartening loss, coupled with allegations of racism against Galtier, damaged in his relationship with the team.

The club acted quickly and showed Galtier the door. Though they eyed German boss Julien Nagelsmann, PSG eventually brought in former Spain and Barcelona boss Luis Enrique. Galtier left Paris for Qatar to manage Al Duhail. Enrique on the other hand has started strongly with the Ligue 1 giants. Either way, Enrique’s gesture of thanking his predecessor was a true mark of sportsmanship.
